Letting Go

A couple of months ago my granddaughter went skydiving, not only did she go skydiving, but she did it in Switzerland.  Initially, I thought how scary, how could she do something as scary as this and how could she do it so far from home?  I couldn’t believe it!  I remember her as a little girl who was afraid to go to a Halloween party, afraid to go into a dark theater.  Was this the same girl?? Power vs Control

“It’s mine, it’s mine”, I recall one of the members of my organization, The Family Business Council of Greater   New  York tell me about an argument she had with her brother.  They were fighting over a stapler.  The stapler represented a toy they fought over when they were kids.  Power vs control?

This is one of many stories that typify conflicts in a family business.  Conflicts between siblings, conflicts between a husband and wife, conflicts between father’ and son, father and daughter – it doesn’t matter as it all comes down to the same thing; power vs control. […]

Family Dynamics: Family vs. The Family Business

As women working with their families in business, we struggle with many issues. At any given moment we are wearing a different hat: the mom, the wife, the sister, the aunt, the grandmother.  Regardless of which hat we wear, the re-enactment of the family dynamics plays out in the family business whether we like it or not.

Having worked with my husband and two of my sons in our family business for more than 12 years, I became aware that the dynamics of my family played into the family business. Sometimes it was as if I were back home hearing to my son’s argue over a toy, or my husband trying to resolve their conflict. […]

Our Journey Continues

Yesterday, President Obama’s Inauguration for his second term once again made history and is a new beginning not only for him, but for all of us.  His inaugural speech talked about our journey – our never-ending journey to bridge the words of our Constitution.  And he continued that our journey is not complete until we commit to our equality, our journey is not complete until wives, mothers, and daughters can earn the living they rightfully deserve. […]

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

I stopped making new year’s resolutions years ago, but this year I decided I to make one: my resolution is for you to get to know me and for me to get to know you. The world has gotten smaller, and regardless of where we live we can share stories – we all have them. Tell us what’s going on in your life, in your work/life or anything you want to share; an anniversary, a birth, a career change, or even thoughts about reinventing yourself – let’s reach out and broaden our support system, expand our resources and build a network of women who want to grow, make change and become empowered. […]

Balance Your Work, Balance Your Life

As a parent and grandparent the news of the tragedy of Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Ct. saddens me beyond belief.  It make me think of how fragile our lives are and how much we must be aware of each and every moment — to say I love you, to give a hug, to give a kiss, to give comfort, to give joy.

We must learn from this tragedy and take time to look at how we balance our lives.  Do we balance our work/life?  Are we workaholics and work 24/7?  Do we spend quality time with those we love? […]

Communication & the Talking Stick

Have you ever given thought as to how you communicate?  Do you think before you talk or do  your emotions get the better of you causing you to talk before you think?
Our process of communicating goes back to when we were young – how we were taught, what we observed and what we were told we could and could not talk about.  As a result when we communicate today we are on automatic pilot and replicate what we learned. […]

Defining Boundaries — Define Your Identity

In my last blog I wrote about change.  I am hoping I inspired many of you to think of change as a new experience and how it can enhance your life.

Change also helps us define our identity. Without understanding who we are and what makes us unique we are unable to communicate clearly and respect our relationships with family members and other individuals we work and socialize with.

Successful relationships are made up of two people, both of whom have a clear sense of self.  In a family business this can be tricky as each member plays a different role that creates “boundary confusion.” […]

Get Ready, Get Set, Change!

It’s ironic that the topic for my blog is change, as the wrath of hurricane Sandy certainly created change for so many – Change that we couldn’t control, but prepared for it as best we could.   Barring any catastrophes’ change can be a good thing if change is made by choice.  However it can also create emotional chaos.  Many factors come into play; fear, risk, worry, or leaving your comfort zone, all, which can cause resistance.  Issues such as entitlement and approval come into play.  As women, we tend to judge ourselves through he eyes of others, yet men don’t seem to need that same approval.  […]

You Are Not Alone!

Did you know that 90% of businesses are family owned?  Initially women were asked to join the family business as they were the caregiver of their families and it was thought they could continue this job within the family business. First it was asked as a “favor” and then their role was expanded based on  their talents.

My name is Rosann Levy and I want to welcome you to my “Women in the Family Business Forum” blog.  You might wonder – why write a blog for women who work with their families?  The answer: as women we wear many “hats.”   We are mothers, daughters, wives, significant others, sisters, grandmothers, married or single, and regardless of which hat we don sometimes our responsibilities can be overwhelming – we are continually dealing with which comes first – the family or the business. […]
