As a parent and grandparent the news of the tragedy of Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Ct. saddens me beyond belief.  It make me think of how fragile our lives are and how much we must be aware of each and every moment — to say I love you, to give a hug, to give a kiss, to give comfort, to give joy.

We must learn from this tragedy and take time to look at how we balance our lives.  Do we balance our work/life?  Are we workaholics and work 24/7?  Do we spend quality time with those we love?

Most people tell me “I don’t have time.”  The issue; we must make time.  Whether you work with your family, or are self employed, or are employed by someone else, in today’s world it has never been more important to take time for yourself.  Life is a journey of curve balls and it’s how we juggle them that determine our quality of life.

This horrific tragedy puts things in perspective. Yes, it can be difficult to balance your work/life working with family members, or being a entrepreneur, or being accountable to someone else, but whatever the challenges all can be resolved.

Regardless of issues, taking time for you is a must.  Take control of your work/life and incorporate some to the following suggestions into your schedule:

  • Build downtime into your schedule — Schedule time with family and friends and other activities that help you recharge.
  • Give up things that sap your energy — Take stock at what’s not enhancing your business or personal life and minimize time spent in these areas.
  • Exercise — Regardless of a jam-packed schedule, it’s a must to carve out time to exercise at least 2 or 3 times per week.
  • Relax and recharge — Don’t need to make big changes to bring more balance to your work and your life.  Set realistic goals, write them down and adhere to them.  Take care of yourself first and you will be able to take care of others.

It’s the quality of life that will bring you joy and memories that will last forever.

May you have a Happy, Healthy, Joyous and Peaceful New Year.
